A (brief) History of Purple Rain

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few decades, you're probably aware that Prince's 1984 movie Purple Rain is considered to be one of the most influential films of all time. But what you may not know is that the movie almost didn't get made at all...
Production on Purple Rain began in 1983, shortly after the release of Prince's album of the same name. The movie was originally going to be a concert film, similar to The Rolling Stones' 1981 movie Let's Spend the Night Together. However, when director Albert Magnoli met with Prince to discuss the project, he quickly realized that a traditional concert film wouldn't do justice to Prince's artistry.

So, Magnoli came up with the idea to create a fictionalized version of Prince's life, with Purple Rain serving as the soundtrack. When Prince heard Magnoli's pitch, he was immediately on board. The two set about writing the script together, with Magnoli making sure to include as many references to Minneapolis (Prince's hometown) and its music scene as possible.
