Creme de Violette: The most delicious liqueur you've never heard of.
You may have never heard of Creme de Violette, but I'm here to tell you that it's the most delicious liqueur you've never tried. Often referred to as " violet liqueur", Creme de Violette is made from macerated, distilled, or infused violets. It ranges in color from pale lilac to deep blue, and has a sweet, floral flavor.
History of Creme de Violette
Creme de Violette has a long and storied history. According to legend, it was first created by Napoleon's chef during the French emperor's exile on the island of Elba. After Napoleon's return to France, the liqueur fell out of favor and was not commonly seen again until the 1950s. Today, it is enjoying a renaissance among bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts.
How to Use Creme de Violette
Creme de Violette can be enjoyed on its own or used as an ingredient in a variety of cocktails. It is often used in Aviation cocktails, which are made with gin, lemon juice, and maraschino cherry liqueur. Creme de Violette can also be used in a modified Martini recipe by substituting gin for vodka and adding a dash of the liqueur. Or, for a summer refresher, try mixiing Creme de Violette with lemonade or club soda.
Next time you're at the liquor store, pick up a bottle of Creme de Violette and give it a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by its delicate flavor. Cheers!
